Sam is an electrifying jazz drummer, percussionist, composer, and passionate music educator with a love for rhythm that’s contagious. Originally from the beautiful Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, Sam’s musical journey has taken him to some of the most prestigious music schools in the country – and now he’s here to help you start (or level up) your own.
A proud graduate of SUNY Fredonia, Sam earned his BA in Jazz Studies with honors, studying under acclaimed educators and performing with award-winning ensembles like the Fredonia New Jazz Ensemble, a two-time Downbeat Award winner. He didn’t just show up – he stood out, earning multiple scholarships and recognition for both performance and leadership.
Sam recently completed his Master of Music in Jazz Studies at the world-renowned Eastman School of Music, where he studied with jazz greats and performed with top-tier ensembles. He even taught at the University of Rochester and Eastman’s Community Music School while earning his degree – a testament to his skill and dedication as both a performer and teacher.
Now based in the Hudson Valley, Sam is an in-demand drummer on the New York and Virginia jazz scenes, performing alongside jazz legends like John D’Earth, John Clayton, Brad Leali, Delfeayo Marsalis, and more. Whether he’s leading his own band at a festival or inspiring his students one-on-one, Sam brings energy, creativity, and real-world experience to every lesson.
